Galliani Targets First Place In Group D

Milan Vice-President Adriano Galliani was pleased with yesterday’s win over Cagliari but now has his eyes firmly locked on the Champions League trip to Benfica.

The Rossoneri recovered from going a goal down early in the game to win 2-1 in Sardinia, courtesy of strikes from Alberto Gilardino and Andrea Pirlo.

“I gave the team many compliments,” said Galliani.

“This match seemed cursed, with the first goal by Cagliari and the penalty saved by Fortin. It wasn't easy to put things straight in this match, but the lads did well to fix things.”

Milan’s next game is on Wednesday against Portuguese-giants Benfica. A win for Carlo Ancelotti’s men would see them safely through to the knockout stages of Europe’s premier club competition.

“Now we think about the Champions League: we still have two matches to play in Group D and these will decide whether we go through and whether we will be in first place,” said Galliani.

“We have two objectives: the qualification and first place. Let's remember that when we've been eliminated from Europe in knockout games it always happened away from home, never at San Siro.”
